Early Detection Saves Lives: A Simple Screening Today Can Protect Your Tomorrow
CARROLLTON, Mo. – In recognition of World Lung Cancer Day, observed annually on August 1, Carroll County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) is raising awareness about the importance of lung cancer screening and encouraging eligible individuals to take advantage of potentially lifesaving early detection services.
Lung cancer remains the number one cancer killer, claiming more lives each year than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. However, when detected early, lung cancer is often more treatable. Studies have shown that early detection through screening can reduce lung cancer mortality by up to 20 percent.
“World Lung Cancer Day serves as an important reminder that screening saves lives,” said Hilary Taylor, CCMH Director of Radiology. “Many people do not experience symptoms in the early stages of lung cancer, which is why screening is so critical for those who are at risk.”
CCMH offers Low-Dose Computed Tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening, a quick, noninvasive scan designed to detect lung cancer before symptoms develop.
An individual may qualify for LDCT lung cancer screening if they:
- Are 50 to 77 years old
- Have smoked the equivalent of at least one pack of cigarettes per day for 20 years
- Are a current smoker or have quit within the past 15 years
- Have a provider order and prior authorization before scheduling the screening
Individuals interested in screening should contact their primary care provider (PCP) to determine if they meet the eligibility requirements and to obtain the necessary order and authorization.
World Lung Cancer Day also seeks to reduce the stigma often associated with lung cancer. While smoking is a major risk factor, anyone can develop lung cancer. Increasing awareness, promoting prevention, and encouraging early detection can help save lives and improve outcomes for patients and families impacted by the disease.
