CEO: CCMH Named Top 20 Critical Access Hospital

June 14, 2023

Carroll County Memorial Hospital has earned the designation as a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital in the US for 2023.

By Scott Thoreson, CCMH Chief Executive Officer

We were notified in May that Carroll County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) earned the designation as a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital (CAH) in the United States for 2023. It had been shared with us previously that CCMH was a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital, and then this list was shortened to identify the Top 20.

Just to remind everyone, a critical access hospital is a hospital that is limited to 25 beds in size, located approximately 30 miles away from another hospital and has made a determination to be paid by Medicare on the basis of their allowable costs. Larger hospitals are paid on a different basis that is a diagnostic-related group methodology. In Missouri, there are 34 critical access hospitals. Other Missouri CAHs that made the Top 100 list, but not the Top 20, are located in Bethany, Cassville and Albany. There are approximately 1,300 CAHs in the United States and being a Top 20 CAH puts CCMH in the top 1.5 percent of all critical access hospitals in the entire country – quite an accomplishment!

The National Rural Health Association, based in Kansas City, Missouri, works with the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX to identify and score hospitals on the basis of eight attributes, which are inpatient market share, outpatient market share, quality, outcomes, patient perspective, cost, charge and finance.

While it was not a stated goal of ours to achieve notoriety by being named a Top 100 or Top 20 Critical Access Hospital in the nation, we are extremely proud of this recognition and shared it with our employees during Hospital Week. It is only through the hard work and dedication of our employees that we can achieve the success that is measured in the eight categories mentioned above.

We will use this newly acquired designation in our communication mediums and also share it with prospective employees who are looking to join an organization that has been recognized as being successful on many different measures. While we have always known that CCMH is a special place, we now have a bonafide measure to substantiate our claim.

I hope this article has provided a bit more of an insight about Top 20 Critical Access Hospital status and why it is such a big deal. I would encourage you to reach out to your friends, family members and neighbors who work at CCMH and express your appreciation to them and congratulate them on this amazing accomplishment. I wish you good health!
